From Gala to Golden Delicious, thousands crunched local apples during New York’s Food Day. Visitors to the Union Square Greenmarket got a chance to join in on the kickoff crunch at noon or take a free apple for the road.

The third annual Big Apple Crunch promoted the efforts of New York State’s apple growers, who produce 30 million bushels a year.
